The most important ingredient to keep in mind while taking care of your lawn is the watering part. Water is extremely essential when it comes to maintaining a healthy lawn. However, the process of watering the lawn should be done with utmost care and perfection. When to Water Your Lawn When your lawn has become grayish in color and looks very dull and unhealthy, it is time to water it. The dehydrated lawn will become dull green. You can also walk on the lawn to see if it needs water or not. If the footprints are not disappearing quickly from the lawn, it means that the grass blades do not have enough moisture in them. It is the perfect time to water the lawn. Most people believe that they can water their lawn at anytime during the day or night. They believe that it is perfectly alright and won’t affect the health of the lawn. Proper lawn care is more specific than that. The best time to water your lawn is before 8 in the morning. This is because the winds are usually more calm and temperatures are cooler. Water can easily soak in the soil with less chance of evaporating. Try to avoid watering in the evening but if you find it absolutely necessary, try to do it between 4 and 6 pm. If you water later than that, you are increasing the chances of developing disease and/or fungus. Keep in mind that watering is not always necessary. Most lawns are resilient. If your lawn is in proper condition, then it can survive weeks without water. How Much Water To Use It is usually recommended that the water should soak into the soil 6 to 8 inches from the surface. This condition is for the well maintained and healthy lawns. To soak the soil deeply, most lawns require 1 to 1.5 inches of water every week. Your lawn can get this amount of water either from watering or rain. You can either water your lawn one time or two times as per your choice but during the hot months we do recommend twice per week. However, make sure that you do not overwater the lawn as this can be just as damaging as underwatering. How to Tell if You Have Watered Enough It is very important that you do not overwater the grass. That is why you always want to check if you have watered enough. One effective way is by checking the soil. During your first watering, you can check to see how long your lawn takes to soak the water. This should be done every 15 minutes. You can use a screw-driver to check how deep that water has reached. Make sure the soil has completely absorbed the water before testing. Mark the time and water your lawn for this long in the future. On some days if you don’t feel like watering the lawn and want to know if it will be fine, then you can use what is called the thumb rule. If you can not easily press your thumb into the soil then it is time to water. ecoScapes 16707 Q Street Suite 2S Omaha, NE 68135 (402) 671-0453 https://ecoscapesomaha.com
